Final Project–Last 2 Days

You have all period today and tomorrow (after homeroom activities) to complete you final projects. 

TODAY IS THE LAST DAY I WILL ACCEPT ANY LATE WORK!!!!

On Wednesday, your site must be ready to be shown to the class.  We(the class and myself) will act as a publishing house, and your task is to convince us to pick up your magazine/newspaper site.  Each group will:

  • give a short presentation about their mewspaper or magazine
  • allow 5 minutes forthe class to read through the site
  • lead a class discussion about the site

Final Project Worktime

You will have all week to work in your groups.  If you did not turn in the evaluation sheets for your first articles, please get those in ASAP.   Also, many of you did not turn in your flash assignments.

This week, in addition to having your second articles due (grading on Thursday), I will be meeting with each team to grade your planning(Weds or Thursday). At that time, I will look at the following three things: 

  • completed planning sheets with jobs/responsibilities/visions
  • site maps
  • home-page mock-up
  • how you will be using flash

FLASH ASSIGNMENT

Today and tomorrow, you will work on FLASH for half of the period and spend the other half working in your groups on developing content.

I will complete grading of everything you have been assigned up to this point today, and will grade flash and your first stories tomorrow.

FLASH ASSIGNMENT–Make an animation(10+sec or 5+layers  for an A), slideshow(moving text and 5+pics for an A), or interactive webpage using flash. Use your books, the help menu, or online tutorials as references.  If you know how you plan to use flash in your final project you can start on that for this assignment.

Flash Animation

Today you will use flash to create a simple animation.  You can either do it on your own, or follow the instructions in excercise 50, pages 287-294.

You will also have time to work in your groups on your first articles.  A due date will be set for these today.

Intro to Flash

FLASH:  This week, we will be working with Flash to learn the basics of the program.  Today, you will take a look at the program and some resources, (your textbook, the program and Flash Tutorial) and answer the following three questions in your journals:

  1. What is flash, and what can you do with it?
  2. Find 3 examples of flash being used on the web—copy/paste the website URL and briefly describe each.
  3. How could you use flash in your final project?

You will have the second half of the period for working in your groups–your goals are  to finish the planning worksheets and begin your first articles today.

CSS Wrap-Up

Today we are going to look at a couple examples of how CSS works and then you will have the task of modifying a style sheet for an existing site.

We will beging by looking at CSSZENGARDEN, then talk about the Franklin Site and the Tolo.  I have put a folder into the Web Design Materials for you to modify—save it to your desktop, and then follow instructions—you need to make a minimum of 5 changes to the style.

The last half of class you will begin working in groups and planning your sites—each of you needs to have your first article assigned today!!!!

Internal v. External CSS

For the first half of the period you will complete EX 44 on page 260-266.  If you are behind from yesterday, do the reading during SSR.

You will have the second half of class for group planning and beginning to write your first articles.

Beginning with CSS

TURN YOUR SITE FOLDERS IN DURING ANNOUNCEMENTS!!!!

For the next 2 weeks, class will be divided in half–you will have time to work in groups and I will be giving you assignments focused on CSS and FLASH. 

Today, you will spend some time looking at some online magazines and newspapers, and will begin developing a concept for your group sites.

During the second half of class, you will begin learning about CSS.  After a brief intro, you will complete EX 43 on pages 252-258.

Project Evaluation and Final Project Intro

After SSR, you will be grading the websites of 2 classmates.  You will then turn your sites into the INBOX.

For the second half of the period, we will begin takling about your next project—you own online newspaper or magazine.  There are three goals for todays discussion: 

  1. set groups if needed
  2. look at some examples:
  3. begin to develop a concept/purpose for your site

Final Day for Sport/Game Site

Today is the last day you have to work on your website.  Grading will occur tomorrow at the beginning of the period.

Be sure you have completed your part of filling out the rubric.

SPORT/GAME SITE DEVELOPMENT

You will have all week to work on your animal sites.  You should be spending your class time working on the navigation and design.  Do your content development(aka writing) at home so you have class time to work with dreamweaver.

Today we will take some time to go over questions and talk about being ready to learn about creating an image gallery.

Here are the expectations for the project:

  • topic for the site must be an imaginary game or sport that does not already exist
  • your site must have at least 5 pages containing well-written and complete content on different aspects of  your sport/game
  • A variety of  images need to be created for your site (these should include be pictures(original photos and edited images), banners, and buttons)
  • have a working directory using buttons(your own roll-over buttons are required for an A)
  • include at least 5 external links in the site to other websites (all must work at school)
  • you need to show good use of the basic design concepts we have discussed this year(space, color, font choice, consistency, etc)
  • use templates, library items, and inserted elements(date/time, etc)

Here is a suggested timeline:

MONDAY–Design Homepage that includes banner, rollover buttons, and general description of the sport or game

TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY–Complete written content.  Add content to each of your pages and format using the various tools you have used in the past few weeks(bullet points, numbered lists, definition lsits, titles/subtitles, etc)

THURSDAY–Add pictures.  Work with images and get them placed throughout the site

FRIDAY—fine tune and test site

More Dreamweaver Tools

For the next three days, we are going to go through several excercise in the book and learn about some tools that Dreamweaver features to make web design easier.  Some we will do as a class and you will just practice using, others you will need to do on your own.

Here is what you will be expected to know and use:

  • EX 25–background image, image map, and navigation bar
  • EX 26–using a template
  • EX 27–using library items
  • EX 32-34–using tables

These will not only be useful, but you will be expected to use them in your GAME/SPORT site.

 HOMEWORK:  COME UP WITH AN ORIGINAL IDEA FOR A GAME OR SPORT AND CREATE A SITE MAP THAT OUTLINES IDEAS FOR AT LEAST 10 PAGES.  FOR EACH PAGE WRITE A 1 SENTENCE DESCRIPTION THAT EXPLAINS MORE IN DETAIL WHAT WOULD BE INCLUDED ON THAT PAGE.

Image Editing and Project Choices

Before completing the work from yesterday, write a blog comment that gives your first and second choices for what you think would be the best option for your first DREAMWEAVER PROJECT. Be sure you think you could develop at least 10 different pages of content that use original ideas and your own images.

Bitmap vs. Vector Images

Our first task today is to begin talking about your next project.  The goal will be to come up with a general topic that you will all be using as a basis for your first site in dreamweaver.

Also, today and tomorrow you will read about more editing tools in fireworks and begin to understand the differences in vector and bitmap images. Complete the following:

Catch Up Day

Today you have the period to complete the work frim last week in Fireworks, as well as making sure you are caught up in the book.
The classmate connections sites will be graded today.

To complete the fireworks assignments I gave you do the following:

  1. Make a new page in your sandbox for edited images and place both images from last Tuesday there. Under each, write a sentence explaining what you did to edit the image.
  2. Make another page for images you created–put all 5 nameplates on that page. Under each write a sentence that includes the dimensions and the effects you used.

I will be grading these tomorrow.

Creating Nameplates

Today you will create 5 nameplates.

  • Each must be a different size and use at least 2 filters or effects.
  • You can use your name on all or use some other (appropriate)words if you like.

Working with Fireworks Canvas and Tools

During SSR today, I am going to look at and grade your Gardenscape Sites.

REVIEW:  Links need to be added to the page –find the sites online and create external links

I have 2 pictures for you to work with today to learn about settings and tools in Dreamweaver. 

For the first image—79.jpg—we will work with the canvas to rotate and resize it. 

With the second image—mountain_and_pole.jpg—we will discuss ways in which we can get rid of the pole using different tools from the palate.

When done you can work on fininshing your links for the classmate connection sites that I will grade tomorrow first thing or practice editing some images of your own!!!

Image Editing

This week we will be working in Fireworks and editing images. In addition to working out of the book, I will have a few small photo-editing projects. Today you will complete Excercises 17-18 in the text.

I will be grading your work up to this point.

Apply what you Learned

WARM UP:  JOURNAL 13–WEBSITE IDEAS
List 3 ideas for websites that you would like to create as projects in this class this quarter.  For each idea list at least 5 specific things you would include in terms of content for the site.  For at least 2 of the sites (if not all 3) the content would need to be at least 80% original–meaning your own images, graphics and writing.

Work on the next phase of the Classmate Connection site—ex 14.  By the end of the period you should have all assigned work from Lessons 1 and 2 completed!!

Today you will complete excercises 11-12 in your text. You will be creating different types of links, and then testing them in a browser.  Try each of the installed browsers.

Lesson 1 Wrap-Up

Today we will review the basics of dreamweaver by creating a sandbox and building a simple page within it.

You will then work on the final assignment from Lesson 1–EX 5 on pages 33-34.

Dreamweaver Intro

For the rest of the week, you will begin working with Dreamweaver and using the text extensively.  We will take a bit of time to discuss how the book is structured and you will complete lesson 1, excercises 1-3.

This will be more reading than doing anything, but you should have a pretty good understanding of how the program is structured and some basic commands.

History of the Internet

Today you will have the period to research the History of the Internet—be sure to get 10 or more facts from at least 3 different sites.

Also we will look at a couple videos that discuss the history of the Internet.

After final grading of your sites, we are going to begin taking a brief look at the history of the Internet and the growth of the World Wide Web.

Find at least three different websites related to the History of the Internet.  In your journals, list at least 10 facts you believe are important to the development of this technology.  Look for important dates, people, inventions and events.  Be sure to list the source with your notes.

Kiosk Evaluation

Then you will do a final evaluation of your Kiosk project, as well as grading those of 2 of your classmates.  Be sure to write 5 good comments about each of the other sites you evaluate.

Plan for rest of the Week

You have the next 3 days to finish your Kiosk projects.  Here is a suggested timeline including anything that will be taught.

WEDNESDAY–I will go over descriptions and requirements for splash, home, and credit slides.  You should get these made.

THURSDAY–all period to work—complete the 4th and final section of your kiosk—the “Show-Off” slides (required for an A)

FRIDAY–final design touches, editing, revising and testing of sites.  The 2nd half of class will be spent doing evaluation using the rubric provided.

Animation Slide and Overall Design

SSR–first 15 minutes

Today we will look at a few more examples and discuss some basic design concepts based on your reading about color yesterday.

You will then have the period to work on the animation slide.

Use of Color and Drawing Tools

For the first part of class today, you will look at some online resources that discuss use of color and design.  Then you will work on the next section of the kiosk—computer art.  I will talk about grid and abstract today and tomorrow we will work on animation.

KIOSK:Picture Slides

Today you will develop the 2nd section of content for the Kiosk project.  You will be focusing on using a variety of images to illustrate 3 things—hobbies, skills, favorites, etc.

Be sure that all slides have the following:

  • some explanatory text or captions

Intro to PowerPoint Kiosk

Your word webpages are due today—I am waiting for the server to get reconfigured before you turn them in—it may be a few more days.

Today you will begin working on your second project.  This will be an intensive project, with many steps and requirements.  It is fairly easy—just a lot of work.

The first thing we will do is discuss site maps.  You will draw one of your own as I explain it.

You will then have the rest of the period to design and program your first navigation slide.

At 8:25, we will discuss how to save iit as a webpage, and talk about various ways to place hyperlinks.

For the first few minutes of class, I will hand out the syllabus and we will quickly go over it.  Ask questions if you have them!!!

In you own words, list the 5 things that were discussed and stressed in class about being important in the agreement you accepted online (its also in your handbook)

Next, we will continue working on the “Word Webpage”.  You will work with color, design and images today.  We will spend a few minutes talking about them and you should take notes in your journals using the following outline:

JOURNAL 3:  Design Basics and Images

  • What are the three basic principles of design for a webpage?
  • What are 5 different ways you can get an image for a webpage
  • Avoiding copy/paste—what is the right way

You will have the rest of the period to work on designing your page and adding images—you must have at least 3.

Content for First 2 Projects

Today you will write 3 long paragraphs about yourself.  They need to be well-written and fairly detailed. Topics should be split int past, present and future. 

Be sure to have a main title and subtitles.

During the second part of class, you will be using some advanced features of word to complete the following tasks:

  • using styles, apply heading 1 to titles and heading 2 to the paragraphs
  • modify both styles as desired
  • send your word document to powerpoint—you should have 3 separate slides with titles and paragraphs

Journals and Pre-Test Discussion

You have the first 15 minutes of class to finish the pretest from yesterday.

You will be using a journal in this class on a regular basis for writing, notetaking and responding to questions.  This will be a single word file that you maintain all semester.  When starting each journal it is important that you provide the following:

  • THE JOURNAL NUMBER GIVEN
  • A TOPIC
  • THE ENTRY DATE

Welcome, Pretest, and Logging On

Welcome to Web Design.  Today we will talk a bit about the class and I will help you out to make sure you all know how to log on.  An important part of logging on is understanding the Internet Use Agreement that you will be asked to electronically agree to.

We will also briefly discuss the pretest that you will begin tomorrow and complete on friday.  You task is to create a web page.
