Entering contests is a great way to build a resume or portfolio, as well as sometimes earning some cash. With the onslaught of youtube and other sites, there are hundreds of contests every year. Try searching for video contests, or google a specific type of video with the sord contest and see what you find.
The schooltube website has several contests going on all the time, with some great rewards such as cash prizes, equipment, and trips. Check out their site frequently for contest info.
Also, look at VidOPP, the video clearinghouse site that list all sorts of contests. 
Below are many upcoming contest and festivals that High School Students can enter. As information comes in I will add it to the page.
NORTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL FILM FESTIVAL
On Tuesday May 18th students from all over western Washingtopn will gather at the Cinerama to watch the best films of the year. One of them could be yours!!!This competition is the premiere contest for High Schools in the Seattle area. There are 11 categories, and the contest is held in the spring with Oscar-like trophies as awards. Past NWHSFF winners have been featured at Sundance!!! More info on the website.
ENTRY DEADLINES: April 18 for full submissions
WASHBOARD SCHOLARSHIP VIDEO CONTEST
Students are invited to create a 60 second video that answers the question Why are scholarships important to you? Washington high school seniors, or current college students, who will enroll in college at least half-time beginning fall 2012, are eligible. Up to $3000 in scholarships can be earned for winning entries. More info here
ENTRY DEADLINE: January 31
“OWN THE NIGHT” LIBRARY PROMO
The “2012 Teen Video Challenge” is a national video competition now underway. Its goal is for more teens to get involved with reading and their public library’s summer reading program. Teens across the country are invited to create a 30-to-90-second public service announcement video with their unique interpretation of the 2012 teen slogan “Own the Night” in combination with reading and libraries. SVN-TV NEWSCAST COMPETITION
ITS NEWS AND ITS ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL. Whether its done daily or weekly, we want to see. School news broadcasts can be entered into this contest–more info here

NATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL FOR TALENTED YOUTH
Open to feature length, shorts, music videos and more. Festival is at Seattle Center—this is a big deal!!!! CONTEST SITE
