Still Life/Depth of Field Analysis

NOTE:  I will be grading your homeowrk today—if you have either assignment from yesterday done, I can grade it at the same time.

EXTRA CREDIT NOTE:  today is last chance to submit work for arts festival—best pics saved to proper folder

For most of the period you will complete a written analysis on your best set of photos from home (same subject with varied depth of field).

  1. Begin by inserting both images into a word document.  Do not do any photo editing!!!
  2. Under each photo write out settings including camera, mode, f-stop, shutter speed and iso
  3. Write a  reflective paper that discusses the following:
    1. how the photos exemplifies still-life photography and why you took them
    2. how depth of field is varied and what you did to get it(be sure to explain what depth of field is)
    3. what compositional techniquesare used and seen in the photos (good and bad)
      • include an understanding of some elements of art

Photos and Ad Grading

Today you need to get your STILL-LIFE with DOF photos ready to grade as follows:

STILL-LIFE(in class)–no naming needed, just be sure all your shots are there

STILL-LIFE(homework)–for each of your 3 scenes, name your best SHALLOW DOF shot and your best WIDE DOF shot

NEWSPAPER ADS WILL BE GRADED TODAY AS WELL

Photoshop–newspaper flyer

Today and tomorrow, you will be working with photoshop to create a newspaper advertisement flyer.  Your first task is to sketch out a plan, then take your photos and create your ad.  Here are the requirements:

  • multi-colored/layered background
  • 3 different product shots (4 for an A)
  • text with name/description/cost
  • store logo (you can use from internet)

Today as you plan you can:

  • sketch it out on paper or choose a prototype
  • determine products you will feature
  • set dimensions
  • do background design
  • find logos needed
  • take photos of products on plain surface, butcher paper or green-screen

Random things that need to be done

FINAL PROJECT DISCUSSION/EXAMPLES–we will take the first 20 minutes to look at and discuss potential final projects

FOLDER CLEANOUT–go through all your photo folders and delete you bad shots.  You may also delete photoshop practice files (these take up tons of space)  Do not delete:

  • any shots from the first week(first 30)
  • any pictures that have not been graded
  • your best work from each assignment

BEST PHOTO COLLECTION–make a new folder called “My Best Shots” and move photos into it

ARTS FESTIVAL—Extra Credit!!–put your very best shot or 2 into the folder for the arts festival

WHEN DONE:  you can take more photos, work on journals, do makeup work, etc.

Photo and Magazine Cover Grading

WARM-UP:  Create a new folder for your Motion Photos Homework and save all your photos from home to that folder.  Name the following 4 best photos only and put in a subfolder: 

  • best stop-action photo of person
  • best motion-blur photo of person
  • best stop-action photo of non-living subject
  • best motion-blur photo of non-living subject

Produce your own Magazine Covers

Today and Friday you have all period to create your magazine covers.  I will do Q & A at least twice for the class as well as giving some starting pointers.

Here is your MOTION PHOTOGRAPHY HOMEWORK assignment for this week and next:
Take multiple shots of 2 different subjects while controlling your shutter speed with the following in mind:

  • one subject must be living and one must be non-living
  • for each subject get at least one perfect shot that displays freeze motion
  • for each subject get at least one perfect image with blurred motion
  • use the rule of thirds as you compose shots

Collages with Picasa–due Friday

Slideshow Production

Today will be spent working in groups on putting your slideshows together in groups.  I will take a few minutes to go over some basics to get you started, and You need to get your pictures together and should lay down your music tracks before adding images to the slideshow–ask for help if you need it!!!

SLIDESHOW REQUIREMENTS:

  • at least 10 good candid photos from each team member
  • 1 photo edited in picasa per person
  • length of at least 1 minute; no more than 2
  • a simple theme or message**
  • school-appropriate music that is edited (i.e faded out)
  • transitions throughout slideshow (especially fade in/out)
  • good use of Ken Burns Effect on many images
  • titles and credits
  • produced in widescreen**

Candids of FHS students

Today you will be out all period shooting candids of Franklin students in classrooms.

Your assignment is to get 50 or more candids.

You may (and should) continue shooting throughout the day in your other classes, lunch and between classes.

While a theme is not required, it will help make a more interesting slideshow and get your group a better grade.

HOMEWORK:  Find 2-3 songs that you might use–bring in CD’s or files tomorrow.

Today during the first part of class you will finish up journal 11 and we will discuss your candid picture assignment for tomorrow as well as the project you will be working on.

After a breief demo, you will choose one of your portraits and edit it using word.  As you edit your photo list and explain 5 tools you discovered.

Reviewing Portraits

Your first task today is to upload your portraits and group portraits as follows:

  • make separate folders for each set of photos
  • be sure to rotate if needed
  • name what you think are your best 3-4 photos from each set
  • these photos will be graded tomorrow in class

To complete this assignment, you will complete a CLIENT-PHOTOGRAPHER REVIEW SHEET—this is due on Thursday.

Next, we wil discuss journals and  candid photography a bit, and you will have time to work on journal 11–

1.  Franklin candids: In your groups, look through 2 different yearbooks and find good candids.  Discuss and come up with a list of 5 techniques or principles you should follow to get good candid photos—list these in your journals.

2.  Textbook Tips: Read the three sources below, then list 5 things that you learned about getting good shots

3.  Look at some examples from professionals at these sites or find your own, find and copy/paste 2 images that really stand out to you and explain why.

JOURNAL 10: Portrait Photography

1.  Photography School—read the first 4 articles, and more if you want, then list at least 5 complete tips you think will help you take better pictures for the next photo assignment

EXTRA CREDIT: Read the article about the Mona Lisa from the photography school list, and explain what pyramidal composition is, and list one other thing we can leran about photography from this great painting.

2.   16 Inspirational Tips—if you really want to go out on a limb and do some stunning work—write down plans for the portrait you hope to take(subject, background, poses, etc.)

3.  12 tips for great group photos–list three tips you feel would be useful, and write down plans for the group you will shoot

4.  Find 2 examples of portrait photographers online, copy/paste a photo by  them as well as describing what you see in their photos that draws your attention(be sure to include the link and photographers or organizations name and some basic info)

People Photos Discussion

For the first 20 minutes of class you need to complete the following:

To zoom or not to zoom

For the next week, we will be working on a unit involving photographing people, but in addition, there will be a few technical camera lessons built in. 

HOMEWORK:  Your first task is to take 30 photos of people by Wednesday–you can do some during class as you complete the photos for journal 8

JOURNAL 8:  UNDERSTANDING THE ZOOM

  1. Define zoom, telephoto, optical zoom, digital zoom, and focal length.
  2. What kind of adjustments can be made for your camera zoom settings (if none look at the canon powershot 750 manual)
  3. If you were going to buy a new camera, what should you look for in the zoom?

After some reading and discussion,  you will have 15 minutes of class to  take pictures using your camera zoom as follows:

  • take a good portrait from 3-5 feet away from your subject
  • zoom all the way in and move back to get the same basic photo
  • repeat to get a second set of shots with different subjects and backgrounds if you have time
  • have your photos saved to your computer by the time instructed

5. What type(s) and power of zoom does your camera or phone have?

History Project–Group Dynamics and Research

IMPORTANT:  FIRST PHOTOS WILL BE GRADED TODAY and PAPERS ARE LATE IF NOT TURNED IN BY START OF CLASS TOMORROW

Today I will quickly go over requirements and show a couple examples of History of Photography Projects in. 

You will have the majority of the period for researching and discusing roles in your groups.

As with nearly any presented project I will be looking at you work in three areas:

  1. CONTENT–obviously the most important
    1. complete and accurate coverage of assigned sub-topic
    2. inclusion of 10 or more related images(at least one scanned)
    3. strong organization
    4. all sources propeerly cited (images and MLA bibliography)
    5. proper use of writing conventions (spelling, capitalization, grammar)
  2. USE OF TECHNOLOGY AND FORMATTING
    1. use of appropriate tool for presenting information(powerpoint, prezi, glogster, etc)
    2. consistency in font/sizes/colors
    3. images appropriately sized and clear
    4. artistically well designed presentation

Format and turn in Papers

WARM-UP:  continue working on your rough drafts

I will be grading surveys, contracts, and lab fees today

Today we will go over some basic tools for fomatting a document and you will have the period to finish your papers.

Here are the requirements:

  • use a proper heading
  • you may use word or publisher (ask about other apps)
  • insert your best photo on the page
  • write a 5-7 sentence paragraph critiquing that photo
  • insert your worst photo on the page
  • write a 5-7 sentence paragraph critiquing that photo
  • work on your layout so everything is attractive and on one page
  • photos should be at least 3×5
  • photos cannot be edited at all (other than resizing)
  • print in color

A good critique will point out strengths and weaknesses about a photo, incorporate information of how it was taken (camera type and settings) and personal feelings about the work.  Be sure to name the subject and other elements that are in your photo as you write.

Today the focus is on getting organized for this class.  You will be starting a journal and uploading your photos.

JOURNALS:  a regular part of this class will be maintaining a journal as a single word file.  Today I will give you two 2 quick practice journals to stress the structure.

After listening to my explanation of the journals purpose, ask questions and then write a summary of what the journal will be used for in this class.

Write down the 5 things that we discussed as the most important concepts from the Network Use Agreement.

All of your work for this class needs to be saved on your computers as follows:

  • make a PHOTOGRAPHY folder

  • put files for each photo taking assignment in separate subfolders

FINAL PROJECTS–Finish Today!!! Present Monday!!!

Today you have the first 30 minutes to work on your projects.  We will then take a break to go over 2 writtten forms that you need to complete and turn in.

PLANNING SHEET:  Complete this form so I can give you a participation grade. Make sure that you have done the following:

  • document what you accomplished each day in class
  •  indicate how much time you spent out of class as well
  • under new learning goals–tell me what resources you used to meet these and what you actually learned
  • revisit and revise the greading criteria

PROJECT RUBRIC:  You need to complete most of your part of the rubric before Monday.  The following must be done:

  • Fill out the top part
  • fill in grading criteria and new learning sections on front
  • complete as much of the back side as you can
  • DO NOT GRADE YOURSELF UNTIL OTHERS HAVE GRADED YOU

On Monday, you will be evaluating two other projects and presenting your to the class.

Finals Week/Snow Revovery Plan

Final Project Worktime

FINAL PROJECTS--you should be using most of the period for working on your final projects.  Here are some suggested tasks:

  • go through all your photos and select those you will be using for your project
  • if using others photos, begin gathering these
  • PLAN what you will be shooting for this project, as well as times to do so
  • do research or reading in books or online to begin meeting your learning goals
  • use the internet to find examples of what you are doing
  • draft a script/storyboard (this will vary for different projects, but writing things out is the first and most important part of an effective plan)–some examples of what this could look like:
    • MUSIC VIDEO SLIDESHOW–print out lyrics and list photos you need to go with lyrics
    • CALENDAR–list photos for each month–find best company to use
    • GALLERY–sketch what the wall/bb board will look like with photo descriptions
    • PORTFOLIO–begin looking for a web-based provider/service and draw sample pages out

Self Potraits–composition and techniques

Today, after discussing final project ideas you will read about self-portrait photography and complete the following journal.

Look at the following resources, then answer the questions below in your journals:

  1. List 5 tips for taking good self portraits from the sites above.
  2. After looking at all the photo examples, copy/paste 2 pictures you really like and explain why each stands out to you.

Photos with a Message

For the next three days, you will be working on the creation of an inspirational, motivational or school-focused message that will be used as content on the big screen TV’s in the hallways.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS ARE:

  • proper sizing for the bigscreen TV’s (16:9)
  • school appropriate message
  • high level of creativity and originality
  • strongly-composed photo that relates to message
  • design that shows good use of colors, balance, and space
  • if in groups at least 1 photo per person

TUESDAY:  PLANNING
 we will discuss ideas and look at some sites with examples and quotes
Also, newspaper ads will be graded and papers need to be turned in

Still-Life Analysis

Today you have the first 10 minutes to upload photos and get them ready for me to grade—be sure to put in folders and name as instructed. 

For most of the period you will complete a written analysis on your best set of photos from home (same subject with varied depth of field).

  1. Begin by inserting both images into a word document.  Do not do any photo editing!!!
  2. Under each photo write out settings including camera, mode, f-stop, shutter speed and iso
  3. Write a  reflective paper that discusses the following:
    1. how the photos exemplifies still-life photography and why you took them
    2. how depth of field is varied and what you did to get it(be sure to explain what depth of field is)
    3. what compositional techniquesare used and seen in the photos (good and bad)
      • include an understanding of some elements of art

Still-Life Assignments (4×4) plus Homework

For the next 4 days(Friday through Wednesday) in class you will be working on ONE of the 4 assignments each day.  You should go in order of how they are listed, with the exception of the day you get to use a camera.

  • sketch it out on paper or choose a prototype

  • set dimensions

  • take photos of products on plan surface or green-screen
ASSIGNMENT 3:  Journal Review/Enrichment

This day is crucial to your grade–it will give you an opportunity to ensure you are caught up with your journal, study for the upcoming test(Friday), and possibly earn some extra points!!  Please do the following in order:

  • make sure journals 18-25 are completely finished
  • reread resources or find new ones if you still are unsure of the concepts(shutter speed, apeture, DOF)

Still-Life Photography Introduction

GRADING TODAY:  In-class motion photos—name your best of water and best of a person in motion

For the next 5-6 days you will be working with and photographing inatimate objects. Still-life photography is very common in advertising as well as in the art world, and you will work to develop skills to take photos that reflect both areas.

  1. What are three things that are important to taking a good still life photos?
  2. What are differences in the photos you see in newspaper flyers (ojbect) and the still life photo examples above?

Motion Photography and Bookcovers

This week, you will be working in class on the following–due to limited cameras not everyone can work at the same time on the same thing.

IN CLASS MOTION PHOTOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT


Practice taking photos during class to capture motion using the shutter speed settings.  You must show that you took photos of the following:

  • water droplets(search the internet for techniques) or other moving water
  • classmates in motion (you may want to bring a football, frisbee, etc)

BOOK COVERS
Recreate or redesign a book cover for your favorite book–there are still some photoshop skills I will cover, so do the following:

  • MONDAY–play with text tools, sketch cover on paper, take photo
  • TUESDAY–learn about layers, begin making book covers
  • WEDNESDAY–finalize book covers

REQUIREMENTS: 

  1. you must take your own photo  (no reusing old images)
  2. have a minimum of 5 layers–name them
  3. use effective text effects (not overused)
  4. pay attention to space, balance, colors, and overall design
  5. recreations must be exact

Today and Friday we will look at various photos that depict motion and discuss techniques. We will also spend a portion of each class looking at the basics of photoshop.  I promise–these are the last two journals until after next week.

Intro to Motion Photography

For the next two weeks we will be working on two different things: motion photography and learning to use photoshop

Due to weather there may be changes in plans, but today you will start working on both.

ACTION PHOTOGRAPHY:  Today we will experiment with the cameras and try to get some good action photos.  We will then discuss successes and failures.

Elements of Art Collage

JOURNAL 18:  Quarter Reflections/Goals
Before getting started today, I want you to take a look at your final first quarter grade on the source, and reflect on the following:

  • are you happy with your first quarter grade–why/why not?
  • what you can do to improve or maintain the grade you want in this class next quarter
  • discuss what you still hope to learn about photography and what are three things you would like to take photos of   in the next few months

COLLAGE EXPECTATIONS
Here are the expectations for your collage:

  • size needs to be 8 1/2 x 11
  • use of at least 4 pictures (6-7 for an A)
  • photos need to all be different subjects
  • elements labeled on all images with either sentence captions or text labels
  • arranged with good use of space and balance
  • **Extra credit for a strong theme

Elements of Art Uploading

Today and tomorrow, you will make a collage of your best elements of art photos using a program called Picasa.

Today you have the first 20 minutes of class to upload and organize your photos.  Put them in a flder called “Elements of Art”  and name your best 3-5 for each element with the name of the element followed by a title (i.e. texture leaf)

I will return and go over tests after that and then we will begin working with Picasa.

Taking Photos with Elements of Art

Today and over this weekend, take photos of subjects of your choice where you incorporate the elements of art.  Try to get 10-15 photos for each of the 5 remaining elements (you did color and texture with fall photos)

You will need to have 1 really good photo for each element by Monday, and each of these must be a different subject.

Line and Shape

Today you will spend most of the period taking photos outside and around the building focusing on line and shape.  You goal is to get an amazing shot that exemplifies line, and one that exemplifies shape.

2nd Quarter Begins, but. . .

Today I want to give you the period to wrap up some loose ends from 1st quarter, and continue working on your next project related to the elements of art.

Here is what you need to do today:

FILE ORGANIZATION/CLEANUP–make sure that your photography folder is set up as shown on board, clean out some photos but do not delete anything you think is a good photo or any of your first 30

JOURNAL CATCH-UP:  Make sure that journals 15 and 16 are complete—remember, 16 is elements of art–you will need this done in order to take photos the next 2 days

YEARBOOK/WEBSITE/WALL PHOTOS:  submit your very best photos for extra credit to be published or hung in our gallery–last chance to improve 1st quarter (please jsut put them in the main folders)

***If you are all caught up–the website rotating image is 405 X 145–edit and submit a photo that is ready to post

1st QUARTER GRADES:  check the source and see me at lunch or afterschool today if you have any concerns or disagreements

Fall Photos–turn in/cameras continuation

PREP PHOTOS FOR GRADING
During the first 20 minutes of class, upload your fall photos into a new folder, then name the best (at least 10).  Be sure to rotate!!!

We will wrap up the discussion form yesterday(modes/resolution/DSLR’s),  and you will play around with the basic modes and catch up in journals while I grade photos.

If there is time we will discuss Exposure and review Composition for the test.

Digital Cameras–How they Work

Today you will be reading and answering 5 questions in your journals regarding the basic technology and functions of a digital camera.  Here are a few resources, spend 10 minutes or so browsing them so you are familiar.

How Stuff Works:   Digital Cameras–use this as your primary resource today–you will need to read all 9 sections as well as looking at some of the more stuff

JOURNAL 15:  How Digital Cameras Work
Use the resources above to find answers to the following questions Except for the vocabulary, paragraph answers are required:

  1. Define the following 10 terms:  CCD; LCD; pixel; mega-pixel; RGB;  lens; shutter; viewfinder; exposure; focus
  2. How does a digital camera record an image?  Explain how color is recorded as well.
  3. Discuss resolution.  What is it? What resolution should you set your camera to and why?  Why do they even put controls to change it on cameras?
  4. What is an SLR camera and how does it work and differ from a point-and shoot?
  5. What is exposure and what are the 2 ways to control  it? Give 3 examples of when and why you would vary these settings.

Photographing Fall and more

Your next assignment will merge learning in 2 areas and focus on taking photographs that depict Fall.

Learning some basics about the DSLR’s and Elements of Art will also be incorporated.

 

JOURNAL 14:  FALL PHOTOGRAPHY
Take a look at these sites and write a brief summary or reflection of what you learned for each:

 Fall Photography—take a minimum of 30 shots between now and Thursday 11/4 that epitomize fall.  I will be looking for the following:

  • adherance to theme
  • experimentation with camera settings
  • variety of shots (portrait, candids, landscape, close-ups)
  • focus on elements of art
  • good quality shots—begin deleting bad ones in camera

HISTORY PRESENTATIONS

Presentations will be given in class over the course of the next 3-4 days. 

  • Save your presentation to the groupshare so it is easily accessible (for prezi save a link with the logon and password on a word document)
  • Using the rubric, grade yourselves on the first 2 sections, then turn it in.  You will have a minute to complete it afterwards as you attatch all your notecards and any other written work

Additionally, this week there will be important tasks posted top the blog that you will want to take care of each day before, between, or after groups present.

Today, do the following:

JOURNAL 13:  Notes on presentations
Afte each presentation and discussion, write down 3-5 key facts or ideas about the History of Photography that were discussed in the presentation–keep these organized by topic.

Yearbook needs great photos of spirit week, school candids, the assembly and sports–save them to the appropriate folder on the groupshare.

History of Photography Presentations

Today we will breifly discuss and go over the requirements for your History of Photography Projects and look at a couple examples.  As with nearly any presented project I will be looking at you work in three areas:

  1. CONTENT–obviously the most important
    1. complete and accurate coverage of assigned sub-topic
    2. inclusion of 10 or more related images(at least one scanned)
    3. strong organization
    4. all sources propeerly cited (images and MLA bibliography)
    5. proper use of writing conventions (spelling, capitalization, grammar)
  2. USE OF TECHNOLOGY AND FORMATTING
    1. use of appropriate tool for presenting information(powerpoint, prezi, glogster, etc)
    2. consistency in font/sizes/colors
    3. images appropriately sized and clear
    4. artistically well designed presentation
  3. PRESENTATION SKILLS
    1. all group members involved
    2. clear, loud and expressive delivery with eye contact
    3. Professionalism

As you work I will be assisting your groups as well as finalizing grades for the portrait project.

History of Photography–group research

Today you will begin working in your groups on a history of Photography research project.  There are several tasks involved in this today:

  • general discussion on group effectiveness
  • assigning sub-topics to groups
  • discussion and listing of guiding question

JOURNAL 12:  _______________ (your subtopic Research)

  • List 3-5 guiding questions that your group came up with
  • Begin researching individually and taking notes
    • copy hyperlinks from sites so you can go back and create citations
    • keep a list of links to pictures you might want to use

We will also finish watching slideshows today and I will begin final grading of your portraits.

Slide Show Production/Client Meetings

This week, you will work on 2 projects using the photos you took last week.

CLIENT-REVIEW PROJECT
Objective: TSW evaluate portraits with the subject using terms related to photo composition

This assignment is to be done independantly outside of classtime, or while others are editing your slideshows if your subject is available.  Instructions are as follows:

  1. Decide which photos you think are better between your portraits and the group portraits
  2. Meet with the subject of the photos and choose the best three
  3. Be sure to ask questions of your client to help you complete the worksheet (take notes–fill out later)
  4. Have them sign the form
  5. Put those images in a sub-folder named “best 3″
  6. Complete the worksheet using terms from our discussion of photo composition

DUE MONDAY 10/11

 

SLIDE SHOW PROJECT
Objective: TSW learn basic tools in slide show production and display their best candid photos for class discussion and evaluation.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • slide show must be between 2 and 3 minutes
  • slide show must have a purpose (theme, story, etc.)
  • slides must be timed with the music (not all the same)
  • A minimum of 2 pieces of music/sound files must be used
  • Ken Burns or zoom and pan effect must be used
  • Transitions and titles must be used

TIMELINE: 
MONDAY—planning and discussion about purpose and music
TUESDAY–photo selection and organization
WEDNESDAY–begin editing
THURSDAY–editing
FRIDAY–fine tuning, titles, turn-in

Photos of People

This week, we will focus on techniques for taking photos of people.  In addition to taking a bunch of photos, you will be learning principles of composition as they relate to the basic types of people photography.

JOURNAL 7:  People Photos Observations and Terms

  1. Import your photos from this weekend into a new folder called “people first-shots”, then begin naming your best 10 and worst 5. 
  2. Each table will be discussing photos as a group for 10 minutes
  3. When instructed, list at least 5 different tips in your journals based on the discussions
  4. take notes on our discussion of some basic concepts

JOURNAL 8: Portrait Photography(tuesday)

1.  Photography School—read the first 4 articles, and more if you want, then list at least 5 complete tips you think will help you take better pictures for the next photo assignment

EXTRA CREDIT: Read the article about the Mona Lisa from the photography school list, and explain what pyramidal composition is, and list one other thing we can leran about photography from this great painting.

2.   16 Inspirational Tips—if you really want to go out on a limb and do some stunning work—write down plans for the portrait you hope to take(subject, background, poses, etc.)

3.  12 tips for great group photos–list three tips you feel would be useful, and write down plans for the group you will shoot

4.  Find 2 examples of portrait photographers online, copy/paste a photo by  as well as describing what you see in their photos that draws your attention(be sure to include the link and photographers or organizations name and some basic info)

JOURNAL 9:  Taking Candids (thursday)
1.  Franklin candids: In your groups, look through 2 different yearbooks and find good candids.  Discuss and come up with a list of 5 techniques or principles you should follow to get good candid photos—list these in your journals.

2.  Textbook Tips: Read the three sources below, then list 5 things that you learned about getting good shots

3.  Look at some examples from professionals at these sites or find your own, find and copy/paste 2 images that really stand out to you and explain why.

PEOPLE PHOTOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENTS (all due Monday 10/3)

10+ PORTRAITS:  Find one person and take a series of portraits(at least 10) of them using varied angles, locations, distances, and lighting.  You must have at least 2 locations and 2 outfits.

10+ GROUP PORTRAITS:  Do the same with a group of 3 or more–extra credit for using a real group (team, club, etc.)–at least 3 different locations

50+ CANDIDS:  Take 50 or more candids in classrooms, hallways, at the assembly, game and/or dance on Friday

Photo Analysis and Camera Basics

This week you will complete the paper we started last Friday, and then we will begin discussing some basic functions of cameras.  PAPERS ARE DUE TUESDAY AT THE END OF CLASS

There will be several journals that you work on as follows:

JOURNAL 3: HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY
Look in the internet for at least 15 facts about the History of Photography.  Spend time reading and understanding, rather than trying to complete this today.  As you summarize or paraphrase info, list the source.

JOURNAL 4:  EDITING WITH WORD
After a breief demo, you will choose one of your photos and edit it using word.  As you edit your photo list and explain 5 tools you discovered.

JOURNAL 5:  UNDERSTANDING THE ZOOM
Read from the sites linked below and answer the first three questions:

Kodak Tips–the basic difference
Optical vs Digital–a detailed explanation
Understanding Camera Lenses–more detailed and advanced reading

  1. Define zoom, telephoto, optical zoom, digital zoom, and focal length.
  2. What kind of adjustments can be made for your camera zoom settings (if none look at the canon powershot 750 manual)
  3. If you were going to buy a new camera, what should you look for in the zoom?

After some reading and discussion,  you will have 15 minutes of class to  take pictures using your camera zoom as follows:

  • take a good portrait from 3-5 feet away from your subject
  • zoom all the way in and move back to get the same basic photo
  • repeat to get a second set of shots with different subjects and backgrounds if you have time
  • have your photos saved to your computer by the time instructed

4.  What differences do you see in the photos, or did you experience while shooting?
5. What type(s) and power of zoom does your camera or phone have?

JOURNAL 6:  BASIC (AUTO) CAMERA SETTINGS
First, find the owners manual for your camera online–if it is a savable file, save it to your photo folder, otherwise, save the link in your journal.  You might try this site – Instruction Manuals Online

Spend about 10 minutes browsing the manual, and then answer the following questions:

  1. How can you change your focus to manual?
  2. What are the basic modes in your camera?
  3. What are two things you learned about your camera from the manual.

JOURNAL 7:  COMPOSITION AND PHOTOS OF PEOPLE
For this journal, your first task is to take 30 photos of people.  You will need to have this done by the beginning of class on Monday.  We will continue this journal on Monday.

Class Routines and Pre-Assessments

This week we will be doing a variety of initial assessment type things and setting some routines in place.

Tasks to be completed are as follows:

  1. going over course expectations
  2. making sure people can do basics on computers (log-on, open, save, use word)
  3. stressing the importance of organization
  4. taking a pre-test
  5. getting  journals set up
  6. beginning a written analysis of your best/worst photos from last Friday

Welcome to Digital Photography

This week is very short, and much of our time will be taken up by doing organizational things.  You will have a worksheet to complete, we will go over school district policy on computer use, and you will be taking photos on Friday.

You first photo assignment is to take 3 0r more photos of at least 10 different subjects (minimum of 30 shots)
