Math Placement Tests (MPT)

The MPT is required for most students who are planning to enroll in first-year math courses at the state’s public universities and some community colleges. The MPT is used for course placement and for college readiness testing. Students who score above 150 on the General Math Placement Test (MPT-G) are not required to take remedial math when they enter a public college in Washington State.

Eastern Washington University, University of Washington, and Western Washington University all use the MPT for placement into math courses. There are three MPT tests with different content and difficulty. Students are to choose among the tests based on the requirements of their institution and the course in which they wish to enroll. The General Math Placement Test (MPT-G), Intermediate Math Placement Test (MPT-I), and the Advanced Math Placement Test (MPT-A).

To register for the tests, students can choose between taking the test On-Campus (at participating institutions) where the fee is ($25 – $45). Or students can take the statewide test that takes place in May and June each year where the fee is $15.

Statewide testing dates and locations ($15 fee) include- May 12 (UW-Seattle), May 19 (UW-Seattle), June 16 (UW-Seattle), June 23 (UW-Seattle). To sign up go to www.washington.edu/oea/testctr.htm or call 206 543-1170.

College Admission Info:

Seniors!

If you are not already, get yourself organized. Applying to college requires attention to detail, important deadlines, applying for financial aid, well-written personal essays, and letters of recommendation from teachers and counselors who know you well.

There are many college planning calendars available online, but here are a couple to get you started:

http://www.collegeboard.com/student/apply/the-application/23626.html

http://www.quintcareers.com/college_application_timeline.html

#1 ACT and SAT college entrance tests-

If you have not signed up to take one of these tests, and plan to apply to a 4 year college, sign up immediately. Fee waivers for these tests are available (from your counselor) for students who have free or reduced lunch.

Please keep in mind that your test scores can take 20 plus days to be sent to your colleges of choice, so make sure you take your test early enough so that your scores can be sent before your application deadlines.

For SAT Score Reporting dates click on this link- http://professionals.collegeboard.com/testing/sat-reasoning/scores/dates

For ACT Score Reporting information click on this link- http://www.actstudent.org/scores/index.html

To sign up for the ACT, click on the following link-http://www.actstudent.org/index.html

To sign up for the SAT, click on the following link- http://sat.collegeboard.com/register

#2 College research

Check out the College Visits @ Franklin Schedule above. Make sure to sign up so that we can send you a pass if the visit is during classtime.

In Seattle we are lucky enough to have a huge college fair come to town each year. The Fall NACAC College Fair is this November 4th & 5th at the WA State Convention and Trade Center downtown at 800 Convention Pl.

This year there will be over 290 colleges, universities, culinary institutes, maritime academies, etc. of all shapes and sizes in attendance. Going to the fair gives you a chance to meet recruiters face-to-face, get feedback on your application and personal essays, ask questions about their programs, campuses, and anything else you are dying to ask. It’s a fun, informative event, so feel free to take your parent/guardian (they come up with great questions to ask), a couple of your friends and go explore the world of college admissions!

To register for this FREE event online, please click on the link below. There you will find the times, events, and colleges that will be in attendance: http://www.nacacnet.org/EventsTraining/CollegeFairs/ncf/Fall/Pages/11FSea.aspx

Monday, October 24th , 6-8pm the Performing and Visual Arts College Fair will be at the Seattle Center Fischer Pavilion.

#3 Filling out your College Applications

We would encourage you to apply to several colleges in which you are interested. It is usually best to apply to a variety of colleges which include safety schools (of which you are almost certain you would be admitted to because your GPA/test scores/class rank are well above average on their school profile), match schools (where you would fall within their middle range on their school profile) and reach schools (where you would fall below their middle range on their school profile).

To find a college’s profile, visit their website or go to http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/index.jsp where you can use the “College QuickFinder” and view college school profiles which will include average student GPAs and SAT scores of admitted students.

Note: Most applications have a required fee. Fee waivers are available through your counselor if you have free or reduced lunch.

To Apply: Check the college’s Admission’s website for their online or paper applications. Many colleges and universities use the Common Application as well. Check to see if the colleges you are applying to use this application. You can find out more about the Common Application at www.commonapp.org .

Be Aware of Deadlines: Create a calendar with the application deadlines of the colleges in which you are interested. Be aware that there are Early Admission, Early Decision, Priority, Honors’ Program, Scholarship, and Regular Admission deadlines. Know which ones apply to you and be sure to submit your complete application(s) on time!

Letters of Recommendation: Many, but not all, colleges require students to include a letter(s) of recommendation with your application. Most often they are required to be written by a teacher or counselor. It is a great idea to think about who knows you well and would be willing to write a positive and well-written letter of recommedation for you. Ask them as soon as possible if they would be willing to write one for you, and make sure that you give them several weeks to complete and send your letter in by the required college deadline. It is not wise to ask for last minute letters as it takes quite a bit of time to write a quality letter of recommendation.

If you would like a “Request a Letter of Recommendation” packet to help you think through what you would like to share with the person who is writing your letter of recommendation (giving them information about your activities, leadership roles, volunteer work, aspirations, classes, etc. helps them to write an informed and personalized letter for you), you can pick a packet up at the Counseling Office.

#4 Financial Aid

The Scholarship Bulletin should be available in October, so begin applying for scholarships now. Also check out the scholarship links on the right column on this page. There are many scholarships out there, so make time to research and make sure that you are only applying for legitimate scholarships (you should not be paying money or fees to apply for a scholarship!).

In December we will have Franklin’s Financial Aid Night. FHS staff, College Access Now, and NELA will be there to help answer questions about funding your college education, what documents you will need gather to fill out the FAFSA form after January 1, 2012, and much more.
